Does Mewing Work, and What Actually Shapes a Jawline?
By Dr. Sushrut Tated, plastic surgeon
Does mewing work? There is no good evidence that pressing your tongue to the roof of your mouth reshapes an adult jaw. A jawline depends on bone structure, body fat, fat under the chin, muscle and skin. When stubborn fat under the chin is the main issue, liposuction of the chin and neck is one option.

What is mewing?
Mewing is the habit of resting the whole tongue flat against the roof of the mouth, with the lips closed and teeth lightly together, for most of the day. It spread through YouTube, TikTok and looksmaxxing forums with claims that it can sharpen the jawline, lift the cheekbones and even “fix” a receding chin. Related trends include “jawmaxxing” with hard chewing gum, jaw exercisers and, at the extreme end, bone smashing.
Wanting a defined jaw is a normal wish. The question is whether these methods do what they promise.
Does mewing work? What the evidence says
Orthodontic and maxillofacial specialists have looked at the claims, and the short answer is that there is no reliable evidence that mewing reshapes an adult face.
- Bones stop growing. Jaw growth is largely complete by the late teens or early twenties. Light tongue pressure does not move mature bone.
- The idea comes from a different field. Mewing grew out of “orthotropics”, an approach aimed at growing children. Even there, good-quality evidence is lacking.
- Photos mislead. Raising the chin, tensing the neck, better lighting and a slight head turn can change a jawline in a photo within seconds. That is posture, not bone change.
Good posture and breathing through the nose are reasonable habits. They just will not change your bone structure.
What actually shapes a jawline?
| Factor | Can it change? | What influences it |
|---|---|---|
| Jaw and chin bone | Fixed in adults | Genetics; only jaw surgery or implants change it |
| Fat under the chin | Yes | Overall body fat, genetics; liposuction for stubborn pockets |
| Cheek fat | Partly | Weight, age; buccal fat removal in selected faces |
| Chewing muscles | A little | Use, clenching, teeth grinding |
| Skin firmness | Changes with age | Age, sun, smoking, weight loss |
| Neck posture | Yes, instantly | Head position and how you hold your shoulders |
For many young people, the biggest single factor is fat under the chin, sometimes called a double chin. This can run in families and can persist even in people who are fit and slim.
Mewing vs exercise vs liposuction
| Mewing or jaw exercises | Overall fat loss | Chin and neck liposuction | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Changes bone | No | No | No |
| Reduces fat under the chin | No | Yes, along with the rest of the body | Yes, in that area |
| Downtime | None | None | A few days to a week of swelling |
| Risks | Jaw pain if overdone | Low with a sensible plan | Surgical risks: bruising, uneven contour, rarely nerve injury |
| Suits | Nobody needs it for shape | Anyone carrying extra weight | Adults with stable weight and a stubborn pocket |
Why bone smashing is a bad idea
Bone smashing means hitting the cheekbones or jaw with a hard object in the hope that the bone grows back bigger. This misreads how bone heals. Plastic surgeons have warned that it can cause fractures, nerve injury, bleeding into the soft tissues and damage to facial fat, leaving a face that looks worse and needs repeated corrective treatment. If you have tried it and have numbness, a change in your bite, swelling that will not settle or a dent in the bone, see a doctor.
Myths about mewing and jawlines
- “Mewing can give you a new jaw in a few months.” There is no good evidence for this in adults.
- “Everyone with a sharp jaw has done mewing.” Jawline shape is mostly genetic and related to body fat.
- “Jawline exercisers burn chin fat.” Exercising a muscle does not burn the fat that lies over it.
- “Surgery can make any jaw look like a model’s.” Every face has limits set by its own bone and skin.
When can surgery help?
Surgery cannot copy a filter or another person’s face, but it can help specific, measurable concerns:
- Chin and neck liposuction removes a stubborn pocket of fat under the chin and along the jaw through tiny openings. It suits adults with good skin tone and a stable weight. See liposuction for how it is done.
- Buccal fat removal reduces a deep fat pad in the lower cheeks through an incision inside the mouth. It suits a small group of people with genuinely full cheeks; removing too much can look hollow with age. See buccal fat removal.
- Jaw surgery or implants change bone, and are usually considered for a bite problem or a marked chin difference. These are major decisions that need careful assessment.
How do you know whether worry about your jaw has become a problem?
Looking in the mirror and wanting to improve is common. It is worth talking to someone if you spend hours each day checking your jaw or face, compare yourself constantly with people online, avoid going out because of how you look, or feel that one procedure would fix how you feel about yourself. This can be a sign of body dysmorphic disorder, which is treatable. In India you can call the Tele MANAS helpline on 14416 for free, confidential support.
When should you see a doctor?
- Jaw pain, clicking or locking after mewing, chewing exercises or clenching.
- Any injury from bone smashing: numbness, a change in your bite, a lump or a dent.
- A lump under the jaw or in the neck that is growing or painful.
- A double chin that has not changed with steady weight loss and bothers you enough to consider treatment.
What should you ask at a consultation?
- Is the fullness under my chin fat, skin, muscle or bone?
- Would weight loss change it first?
- Am I a suitable candidate for chin and neck liposuction, and what are the risks?
- What will my jawline look like as I get older?

Frequently asked questions
Can mewing change my face shape after 18?
There is no good evidence that it can. Adult facial bones have finished growing, and holding the tongue in one position does not move them. Any change people notice in photos is usually from posture, lighting, camera angle or weight loss.
Is mewing harmful?
Gentle tongue posture is unlikely to cause harm. Problems arise when people clench, push hard for hours or ignore jaw pain, which can strain the jaw joint and chewing muscles. Stop if it causes pain or clicking.
Does chewing hard gum give you a jawline?
Chewing can thicken the chewing (masseter) muscles a little in some people, but it does not remove fat under the chin. Constant hard chewing can also cause jaw joint pain.
Does bone smashing work?
No. Hitting your face does not sculpt bone. It can cause fractures, nerve damage, bleeding into the tissues and loss of facial fat, and may leave lasting damage that is hard to correct.
Is double chin liposuction suitable for teenagers?
Usually not. Faces and bodies are still changing in the teens, and weight changes affect the neck. Surgeons generally consider chin liposuction for adults with stable weight after an assessment.
Will a double chin come back after liposuction?
The fat cells removed do not grow back, but remaining fat can enlarge if you gain weight. Skin and the neck also change with age.
