GFC Treatment for Hair Loss in Pune: Growth Factor Concentrate

GFC treatment for hair loss uses growth factor concentrate prepared from a small sample of your own blood and injected into thinning areas of the scalp. It aims to support weak hair follicles in pattern hair loss. Early studies report better density, but they are small, so GFC is usually one part of a wider hair-loss plan.

What each video covers
  • GFC vs PRP for hair lossDr. Sushrut compares GFC and PRP for hair loss and explains how the two preparations differ.
  • What is GFC? (Hindi)What GFC treatment is, whether it hurts, how many sessions may be needed and who it suits.
  • PRP & GFC therapyA short look at PRP and GFC as treatments for hair loss.

What is GFC?

GFC stands for growth factor concentrate. Platelets in the blood carry proteins called growth factors, which help tissues repair and grow. In GFC preparation, a small amount of blood is drawn into special tubes, processed so that the platelets release these growth factors, and spun to separate a growth-factor-rich liquid. This liquid is injected into the scalp where hair is thinning.

GFC is closely related to PRP therapy. The difference is in the preparation: PRP injects concentrated platelets, which release their growth factors after injection, while GFC injects growth factors that have already been released. Preparation methods differ between kits, which is one reason study results are hard to compare.

Who may benefit, and how is suitability assessed?

GFC is mainly used for early to moderate pattern hair loss, where follicles are thinning but still present. It may also be used alongside medical treatment, or after a hair transplant to support existing hair.

Before treatment, the doctor will:

  1. Find the cause of hair loss, because thyroid disease, low iron, recent illness, stress-related shedding, alopecia areata or scalp conditions need their own treatment.
  2. Examine the scalp, often with magnification, to judge the pattern and how many follicles remain active.
  3. Check whether GFC is suitable: it is usually avoided in people with platelet or bleeding disorders, active scalp infection, current cancer treatment or pregnancy, and blood thinners are discussed.
  4. Take baseline photographs so that progress can be judged fairly.

How does GFC compare with other treatments?

Treatment How it works Points to consider
GFC Growth factors from your own blood, injected into the scalp Small, early studies; several sessions; cost per session
PRP Concentrated platelets from your own blood More studies than GFC, but methods vary; several sessions
Minoxidil Applied to the scalp (or taken by mouth on prescription) to prolong hair growth Daily, ongoing; initial shedding is common
Finasteride (men) Tablet that lowers the hormone that shrinks follicles Prescription; possible side effects discussed with your doctor
Hair transplant Moves resistant follicles into bald or thin areas Surgery; limited donor hair

GFC does not replace proven medical treatment. Many plans combine it with minoxidil and, in men, finasteride.

How is GFC treatment performed?

  1. Blood sample: a small amount of blood is taken from a vein in the arm.
  2. Preparation: the blood is processed and spun in a centrifuge to obtain the concentrate.
  3. Numbing: a numbing cream or local anaesthetic may be applied to the scalp.
  4. Injection: the concentrate is injected in small amounts across the thinning areas with a fine needle.
  5. Aftercare: you go home straight away and avoid washing the hair for a few hours or as advised.

How should you prepare, and what should you ask?

  • Eat and drink normally before the session.
  • Tell the doctor about medicines that affect bleeding or platelets, including aspirin and painkillers such as ibuprofen.
  • Wash your hair on the day, without styling products.

Questions to ask:

  • What is causing my hair loss, and is GFC likely to help?
  • How many sessions do you recommend, and when will we judge the result?
  • What other treatment should I use alongside it?

What is recovery like?

Time What to expect for most patients
Same day Mild tenderness or a feeling of tightness; small pinpoint bleeding spots
Days 1-2 Tenderness settles; normal hair washing as advised
Months 3-6 Changes in shedding, thickness or density, if any, become noticeable

What are the risks of GFC treatment?

Side effects are usually mild:

  • Pain or stinging during injection.
  • Tenderness, swelling or bruising of the scalp for a day or two.
  • Headache, occasionally.
  • Infection, rare when sterile technique is used.
  • No benefit: some people do not respond.

Contact your doctor if the scalp becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or painful after treatment.

What results can you expect?

When GFC helps, people usually notice less shedding first and thicker hair over the following months. Studies report gains in hair density, but they involve small numbers of people, and long-term results are not well known. Pattern hair loss continues over time, so any improvement needs maintaining.

What affects the cost of GFC treatment in Pune?

  • Number of sessions in the course, and any maintenance sessions.
  • The kit used to prepare the concentrate.
  • Combined treatment, such as medicines or a transplant.
  • Consultation and follow-up visits.

GFC is a cosmetic treatment and is not usually covered by health insurance.

Questions about gfc treatment for hair loss

How many GFC sessions are needed?

Published studies have used a course of about three injections three to four weeks apart, with assessment at three and six months. Your own plan depends on the stage of hair loss and how you respond; maintenance sessions are sometimes advised.

GFC vs PRP: which is better?

Both are made from your own blood. PRP contains concentrated platelets; GFC is processed so that the growth factors are released from the platelets before injection. Small studies suggest GFC may work at least as well, but there are few direct comparisons, so neither can be called clearly superior.

Does GFC treatment work?

Small studies report improved hair density and thickness after GFC, and a 2026 systematic review found it appears safe. The same review rated the evidence at high risk of bias and called the findings hypothesis-generating, so results are not certain.

Is GFC painful?

The injections can sting. A numbing cream or local anaesthetic is often used, and most people tolerate the session well. The scalp may feel tender for a day or two.

Is GFC a replacement for a hair transplant?

No. GFC may help existing thinning hair but cannot regrow hair where follicles are gone. Bald areas need a hair transplant. GFC is sometimes used alongside a transplant.

Can women have GFC treatment?

Yes. Female pattern hair loss is one of the conditions it is used for. Causes such as thyroid problems, iron deficiency or hormonal conditions should be checked first.

Are the results of GFC permanent?

No. Pattern hair loss continues over time, and any benefit from GFC tends to fade without maintenance or other treatment. It is most useful as part of an ongoing plan.
