Liposuction in Pune: Removing Stubborn Fat Safely
Liposuction is surgery that removes pockets of fat that have not responded to diet and exercise, to reshape areas such as the abdomen, waist, thighs, arms, back and chin. A thin tube called a cannula is passed through small openings to suction out fat. It shapes the body; it is not a weight-loss treatment.

What is liposuction?
Liposuction (also called suction-assisted lipectomy) is the removal of fat from under the skin using a hollow tube connected to suction. It is used to reshape areas where fat collects and stays despite healthy eating and exercise, often called “stubborn” fat. Common areas are:
- abdomen and waist (flanks or “love handles”)
- thighs and knees
- upper arms
- back and bra-line rolls
- chin and neck
- the male chest, often combined with gynecomastia surgery
Liposuction is a contouring operation. It does not treat obesity, cellulite or loose skin, and it is not a substitute for weight loss.
Who may benefit, and how is suitability assessed?
Liposuction suits people who are in good general health, near a stable weight, have localised fat that is out of proportion with the rest of the body, have reasonably elastic skin, and have realistic expectations.
At consultation your surgeon will:
- Ask about your health: diabetes, heart or lung disease, clotting problems, previous clots, medicines and supplements, smoking and recent weight changes.
- Examine the areas: how much is pinchable fat under the skin versus deeper fat, skin quality and any stretch marks, and whether the abdominal muscles are separated.
- Check for hernias, especially around the navel or old surgical scars, because liposuction near a hernia needs special care.
- Arrange blood tests and other investigations based on your age and health.
Liposuction may not be right if your weight is still changing, your skin is very loose, most of the abdominal fat is internal, or a medical condition makes surgery unsafe. In those cases a different procedure, or no surgery, may be better.
What are the treatment options?
| Option | What it does | Suited to | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diet and exercise | Reduces fat throughout the body | Everyone; first step | Some areas resist change |
| Non-surgical fat reduction (for example cryolipolysis) | Reduces small fat bulges over several sessions | Small, pinchable areas | Modest change; several sessions |
| Tumescent liposuction | Fat removed after injecting dilute local anaesthetic fluid | Most areas | Swelling and bruising for 1-2 weeks |
| Power-assisted or VASER liposuction | Vibration or ultrasound helps loosen fat | Fibrous areas, men’s chest, back | Same surgical risks; heat injury possible with energy devices |
| Liposuction with skin excision (for example tummy tuck) | Removes fat and loose skin | Loose skin after pregnancy or weight loss | Longer scar and recovery |
The liposuction vs non-surgical fat reduction article compares these options.
How is liposuction performed?
- Marking: the areas are marked while you stand.
- Anaesthesia: general anaesthesia for larger or multiple areas; local anaesthesia with or without sedation for small areas.
- Tumescent fluid: a solution of salt water, local anaesthetic and adrenaline is injected to numb the area and reduce bleeding.
- Fat removal: a thin cannula is passed back and forth through small openings to remove fat evenly, feathering the edges so they blend.
- Checking contour: the surgeon compares both sides and adjusts for symmetry.
- Closing: the openings are closed or left to drain, and a compression garment is put on.
Most people go home the same day. Larger-volume liposuction may need an overnight stay for monitoring.
How should you prepare, and what should you ask?
- Reach a stable weight before surgery.
- Stop smoking for several weeks before and after.
- Share all medicines and supplements; some need pausing under medical advice.
- Buy or confirm the compression garment fitting in advance.
- Arrange someone to take you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours after general anaesthesia.
Questions to ask:
- Which areas will be treated, and how much change is realistic for my skin?
- What is the safe volume for me in one session?
- Which technique will you use, and why?
- Will I need skin removal now or later?
- How long should I wear the garment, and when can I exercise?
What is recovery like?
| Time after surgery | What to expect for most patients |
|---|---|
| Days 1-3 | Soreness, swelling and fluid leaking from the openings. Garment on, short walks several times a day. |
| Week 1 | Bruising peaks and starts to fade. Many people return to desk work after 5-7 days. |
| Weeks 2-4 | Swelling settles; light exercise can usually restart from week 2-3 if your surgeon agrees. Garment continues. |
| Weeks 4-6 | Garment usually stops around 4-6 weeks. Firm or lumpy patches are common and soften with time. |
| Around 3 months | Most swelling has gone and the new contour is visible. |
| 6-12 months | The skin settles fully and numb patches improve. |
The liposuction recovery week by week guide goes into more detail.
What are the risks of liposuction?
- Bruising, swelling and temporary numbness, which are expected.
- Contour irregularities: dents, ripples or lumpiness, more likely with loose skin or overly aggressive suction.
- Seroma (fluid collection), which may need draining.
- Skin colour changes, usually temporary.
- Infection, uncommon.
- Asymmetry between sides.
- Blood clots in the legs or lungs, rare but serious; walking early and garments help reduce the risk.
- Fat embolism, fluid imbalance and injury to internal organs, rare but serious, and more likely with large volumes or multiple procedures together.
- Burns from energy devices when ultrasound or laser is used.
- Anaesthetic and local anaesthetic toxicity, rare when safe dose limits are followed.
Seek urgent help for chest pain or breathlessness, a swollen painful calf, confusion, fever, or rapidly increasing pain. The is liposuction safe? article explains how these risks are reduced.
What affects your results?
Skin elasticity is the biggest factor: firm skin shrinks smoothly onto the new contour, while loose or stretched skin may sag or ripple. A stable weight, wearing the garment as advised, regular exercise and not smoking also help. Liposuction does not remove cellulite or stretch marks.
What affects the cost of liposuction in Pune?
- Number and size of areas treated.
- Technique: tumescent, power-assisted or VASER.
- Anaesthesia: local or general, and anaesthetist fees.
- Facility and stay: day care or overnight.
- Combined procedures, such as liposuction with gynecomastia surgery or a tummy tuck.
- Compression garments, tests and medicines, and follow-up visits.
Cosmetic liposuction is usually not covered by health insurance. Ask for a written plan listing the areas and what is included after your examination.
Questions about liposuction surgery
Is liposuction a way to lose weight?
No. Liposuction changes shape by removing local fat; it changes body weight only slightly. It suits people who are close to a stable, healthy weight and have areas of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise.
Can fat come back after liposuction?
The fat cells removed do not grow back. If you gain weight later, the remaining fat cells, in treated and untreated areas, can enlarge. A stable weight keeps the result.
Can liposuction remove belly fat?
It removes the fat under the skin of the abdomen. It cannot remove the deeper visceral fat around the organs, and it does not tighten loose skin or separated abdominal muscles. A firm, rounded belly from visceral fat or a loose, overhanging abdomen may need a different approach.
Where are the liposuction scars?
The openings are usually a few millimetres long and placed in natural creases or areas covered by clothing. They fade over months but do not disappear completely.
How much fat can be removed in one session?
It depends on your health, weight and the areas treated. Removing large volumes in one sitting carries more risk, so surgeons set a safe limit and sometimes plan two stages. Your surgeon will explain the limit for you.
Does liposuction hurt?
You are under anaesthesia during the procedure. Afterwards the treated areas feel sore and bruised, similar to a hard workout, for one to two weeks. This is usually managed with prescribed painkillers and the compression garment.
What is the difference between VASER and traditional liposuction?
VASER uses ultrasound energy to loosen fat before it is suctioned out; power-assisted liposuction uses a vibrating cannula. Both are variations of the same operation. The choice depends on the area and the surgeon's judgement; no technique removes the risks of surgery.
Liposuction or tummy tuck: which is right for me?
Liposuction removes fat. A tummy tuck also removes loose skin and can tighten the abdominal muscles. If loose skin is your main concern, liposuction alone is unlikely to be enough. See our liposuction vs tummy tuck guide.
