Mommy Makeover in Pune: Surgery After Pregnancy
A mommy makeover is a planned combination of operations that address body changes after pregnancy and breastfeeding, most often a tummy tuck to tighten loose skin and separated muscles, liposuction of stubborn fat, and breast surgery to restore volume or shape. The combination is tailored to each woman and is sometimes done in two stages for safety.

What is a mommy makeover?
“Mommy makeover” (also called mummy makeover) is not a single operation. It is a plan that combines procedures to restore the shape of the body after pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. Pregnancy can leave changes that exercise and diet cannot fully reverse:
- Loose skin and stretch marks on the lower abdomen.
- Diastasis recti: separation of the two vertical abdominal muscles, causing a bulge.
- Stubborn fat on the waist, hips, thighs or back.
- Breast changes: loss of volume, sagging, or breasts that remain larger and heavier.
The usual building blocks are a tummy tuck, liposuction and breast surgery such as breast augmentation or breast reduction. Each woman’s combination is different.
Who may benefit, and how is suitability assessed?
A mommy makeover may suit you if you have finished having children, have recovered from your last pregnancy, have stopped breastfeeding, are close to a stable weight, are healthy enough for a longer anaesthetic, and do not smoke.
At consultation your surgeon will:
- Ask what bothers you most, so the plan addresses your priorities first.
- Review your health and pregnancies: caesarean sections, complications, diabetes in pregnancy, blood clots, current medicines and breastfeeding.
- Examine the abdomen: loose skin above and below the navel, muscle separation, hernias and old scars.
- Examine the breasts: volume, sagging, nipple position, lumps and the difference between sides, with breast imaging when appropriate.
- Assess overall risk: body mass index, age and medical conditions all affect whether procedures can safely be combined.
You may be advised to wait if you plan another pregnancy, are still breastfeeding, are losing weight, or have a health condition that is not under control.
What are the treatment options?
| Concern | Possible procedure | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Loose lower abdominal skin, muscle bulge | Full or mini tummy tuck | Removes skin; full tummy tuck tightens muscles |
| Fat on waist, hips, thighs | Liposuction | Shapes; does not tighten loose skin |
| Smaller, deflated breasts | Breast implants or fat grafting | Restores volume |
| Heavy, large breasts | Breast reduction | Reduces size and lifts the nipple |
| Sagging breasts | Breast lift, with or without implants | Lifts and reshapes |
| Not ready for surgery | Exercise, core physiotherapy, supportive bras | Helps muscle tone; skin and gland changes remain |
How is a mommy makeover performed?
- Planning: your surgeon decides which procedures to combine and whether one or two stages are safer, based on your health and the total operating time.
- Markings are made while you stand.
- General anaesthesia is given, with measures to reduce blood clot risk such as leg compression and early walking.
- Breast surgery is usually done first, while you are positioned on your back.
- Abdominal surgery and liposuction follow: skin removal, muscle repair, navel repositioning and contouring.
- Closing and dressings, with a support bra and an abdominal binder; drains may be placed.
When two stages are recommended, they are usually separated by a few months.
How should you prepare, and what should you ask?
- Stop smoking well before surgery.
- Reach a stable weight.
- Arrange childcare and help at home for at least two weeks; you will not be able to lift young children for some weeks.
- Share all medicines, including hormonal contraception, which can affect clot risk; ask your doctor before stopping anything.
Questions to ask:
- Which procedures do I really need, and in what order?
- Is it safer for me to have them in one operation or two?
- How will you reduce my risk of blood clots?
- How long will I be unable to lift my child or drive?
- Where will each scar be?
What is recovery like?
Recovery is longer than for any single procedure, because several areas heal at once.
| Time after surgery | What to expect for most patients |
|---|---|
| Days 1-3 | Hospital stay; walking slightly bent forward, breathing exercises, binder and support bra. |
| Week 1 | Soreness in several areas; help needed at home. Drains removed when output falls. |
| Weeks 2-4 | Standing straighter; many return to desk work after two to three weeks or longer. No lifting children. |
| Weeks 6-8 | Heavy lifting and exercise usually resume gradually around six weeks. |
| Months 3-6 | Swelling settles and the breast and abdominal shape becomes clear. |
| 12-18 months | Scars mature and fade. |
What are the risks of a mommy makeover?
The risks are those of each procedure (see the tummy tuck, liposuction and breast augmentation pages), plus the added risk of a longer operation:
- Blood clots in the legs or lungs, more likely with longer surgery.
- Seroma, haematoma and wound healing problems.
- Infection.
- Numbness, scarring and asymmetry.
- Implant-related problems if implants are used.
- Anaesthetic risks, which increase with operating time.
A large study of abdominoplasty found that major complications were about 50% more likely when a tummy tuck was combined with other procedures than when it was done alone, and more likely with higher body weight and older age. This is why some women are advised to stage their surgery.
Seek urgent help for chest pain, breathlessness, a swollen painful calf, fever or rapidly increasing swelling.
What affects your results?
A stable weight, no further pregnancies, not smoking, wearing the binder and bra as advised and a gradual return to exercise all help. The result also depends on skin quality, the amount of fat inside the abdomen and the breast tissue you start with.
What affects the cost of a mommy makeover in Pune?
- Which procedures are combined, and whether implants are used.
- One stage or two: two stages mean two anaesthetics and hospital stays.
- Hospital stay, operating time and anaesthesia.
- Implants, binders and support bras.
- Tests, medicines (including clot prevention) and follow-up.
A mommy makeover is cosmetic and is usually not covered by health insurance. If you are unsure whether you need a tummy tuck, the liposuction vs tummy tuck guide is a good place to start.
Questions about mommy makeover
Does a mommy makeover always include a tummy tuck?
No. The combination is chosen for you. Many mommy makeovers include a tummy tuck because loose skin and separated muscles are common after pregnancy, but some women need only liposuction and breast surgery.
Does a mommy makeover fix diastasis recti?
If a full tummy tuck is part of your plan, the separated abdominal muscles are usually stitched together during that operation, which flattens the bulge. Liposuction or breast surgery alone does not repair diastasis recti.
Can I have a baby after a mommy makeover?
Yes, it is possible, but another pregnancy can stretch the abdomen and muscles again and change the breasts, undoing part of the result. Surgeons generally advise waiting until you have finished having children.
How long after pregnancy can I have a mommy makeover?
Your body needs time to recover, your weight to stabilise and breastfeeding to finish so the breasts settle. Your surgeon will advise on timing after examining you; it is usually several months after delivery and after breastfeeding ends.
Does a mommy makeover remove stretch marks?
A tummy tuck removes stretch marks on the skin it cuts away, usually below the navel. Stretch marks elsewhere may fade over time but are not removed by surgery.
Is it safe to have several procedures at once?
Combining procedures shortens total recovery, but it also lengthens anaesthesia and increases the risk of complications such as blood clots. Your surgeon may recommend splitting the plan into two stages, particularly if your BMI is higher or you have other health conditions.
Can a breast lift be part of a mommy makeover?
Breasts that have sagged after breastfeeding sometimes need lifting as well as volume. Whether a lift, implants, reduction or a combination suits you is decided at consultation.
