Reconstructive Surgery in Pune: Restoring Form and Function
Reconstructive surgery repairs parts of the body affected by injury, illness, infection, cancer or differences present from birth, to restore function and a natural appearance. It ranges from removing a lipoma or repairing a torn earlobe to healing diabetic foot wounds and rebuilding tissue after cancer surgery. Much of it is medical treatment rather than cosmetic surgery.

What does reconstructive surgery include?
| Area | Procedures |
|---|---|
| Lumps, cysts and scars | Lipoma removal, multiple lipoma removal, armpit lipoma removal, sebaceous cyst removal, keloid treatment |
| Wounds and ulcers | Diabetic foot treatment, chronic wound treatment, bedsore treatment, varicose veins and ulcers, skin grafting |
| Injuries | Cosmetic stitches for face cuts, facial fracture treatment, earlobe repair, amputation surgery |
| After cancer | Cancer reconstruction surgery |
| Ears, mouth and minor surgery | Otoplasty, tongue tie surgery, circumcision, pilonidal sinus surgery |
Hands, burns and microsurgery have their own sections: hand surgery, burn treatment and microsurgery.
How is reconstruction planned?
Reconstructive surgery starts with the cause. A wound that will not heal needs its circulation, infection, pressure and blood sugar addressed before any closure. A lump needs the right diagnosis before removal. A cancer defect is planned with the cancer surgeon.
The surgeon then chooses the simplest repair that will work reliably, from stitches and skin grafts to flaps of nearby tissue or tissue moved with its own blood supply. Function comes first: movement, eating, walking, protection of bone and tendon. Appearance is considered at every step.
What should you bring to a consultation?
- Reports, scans and biopsy results.
- A list of medicines, especially blood thinners and diabetes medicines.
- Photographs showing how a wound, lump or scar has changed.
- Your questions about recovery, time off work and cost.
When is it urgent?
Spreading redness with fever, a black or foul-smelling wound, heavy bleeding, a serious face or hand injury, or a large burn needs emergency hospital care rather than a clinic appointment. Many reconstructive pages include an urgent-care box with specific warning signs.
What should you ask at a consultation?
- What is the cause of my problem, and does it need tests first?
- What is the simplest repair that will work reliably for me?
- How long will healing take, and how much time off will I need?
- Is the treatment likely to be covered by my insurance?

Questions about reconstructive surgery
What does a reconstructive plastic surgeon treat?
Wounds that will not heal, injuries to the skin, face and hands, lumps and cysts, problem scars and keloids, burns, defects after cancer surgery, and some conditions present from birth, such as prominent ears or tongue tie.
Is reconstructive surgery covered by insurance?
Often, because it treats injury, disease or loss of function. Coverage depends on your policy and the reason for surgery, so check with your insurer before planned operations.
What is the reconstructive ladder?
A way of choosing the simplest reliable repair: stitching the wound closed, then skin grafts, then local flaps of nearby tissue, and finally tissue moved from elsewhere with its own blood supply.
Do I need a referral?
Not usually for a consultation. Bring any reports, scans and a list of medicines. For wounds, diabetes control and blood flow are checked as part of the assessment.
Is the clinic an emergency service?
No. The clinic is open in the evenings for planned consultations. Heavy bleeding, serious injuries, severe infections and large burns need the nearest hospital emergency department.
