Breast Surgery in Pune: Cosmetic, Reconstructive and Benign Lumps
Breast surgery covers operations to change breast size or shape, remove benign lumps such as fibroadenomas, rebuild the breast after cancer, remove extra breast tissue in the armpit and correct nipple problems. Any new lump or nipple change is assessed with examination and imaging before cosmetic surgery is planned, and continued breast awareness matters after any operation.

What does breast surgery include?
| Concern | Procedure |
|---|---|
| Small or uneven breasts | Breast augmentation |
| Large, heavy breasts causing pain | Breast reduction |
| A benign lump, including giant fibroadenoma | Fibroadenoma surgery |
| Breast loss after cancer surgery | Breast reconstruction |
| Bulge of breast tissue in the armpit | Axillary breast removal |
| Nipples that point inwards | Inverted nipple correction |
| Long or wide nipples | Nipple reduction |
Breast changes after pregnancy are often treated as part of a mommy makeover, and enlarged male breasts under gynecomastia surgery.
Lumps and changes come first
Before any cosmetic breast operation, new symptoms are checked. See a doctor promptly about a new lump, skin dimpling, a nipple that has recently turned in, bloody nipple discharge, or a rash on the nipple. Most of these turn out to be benign, but assessment with examination, ultrasound or mammogram and sometimes a needle biopsy comes first.
How is a breast operation planned?
- Your goals: size, shape, symmetry, comfort or removing a lump.
- Examination: breast size, skin quality, nipple position and any lumps.
- Imaging when your age, family history or findings call for it.
- Future plans: pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect the timing and technique.
- Options and trade-offs: scars, sensation, breastfeeding, implant maintenance and recovery time.
What should you know about implants, scars and screening?
- Implants are not lifetime devices; plan for follow-up, and keep your implant card.
- Scars are placed in the breast fold, around the areola or in the armpit, and fade over 12 to 18 months but do not disappear.
- Screening continues after breast surgery; tell the radiographer about implants or previous operations.
Each procedure page explains the operation, recovery, risks and the factors that affect cost.
What should you ask at a breast consultation?
- What is causing my concern, and do I need any scans first?
- Which operation and technique do you recommend, and why?
- Where will the scars be, and how will they look over time?
- How might the operation affect sensation, breastfeeding and future screening?
- What recovery and time off work should I plan for?

Questions about breast surgery
Which surgeon treats breast lumps?
Breast lumps are assessed by a doctor with examination, imaging and often a needle biopsy. Benign lumps such as fibroadenomas can be removed by a general, breast or plastic surgeon. Breast cancer is treated by a cancer team, and a plastic surgeon may be involved in reconstruction.
Can I have breast surgery if I plan to breastfeed?
Often yes, but some operations, including reduction, nipple surgery and some implant incisions, can affect breastfeeding. Tell your surgeon early so the technique can be chosen with this in mind.
Do I need a mammogram before breast surgery?
It depends on your age, family history and the operation. Imaging is often advised before reduction, lift or augmentation surgery in women of screening age, and for any lump.
Is breast surgery covered by insurance?
Cosmetic breast surgery usually is not. Removal of lumps and reconstruction after cancer are often covered, and breast reduction for symptoms may be considered by some insurers.
Do men have breast surgery?
Yes. Enlarged male breasts (gynecomastia) are treated with liposuction and gland removal; see gynecomastia surgery under cosmetic procedures.
