Multiple Lipoma Removal in Pune: Treating Several Fatty Lumps
Multiple lipoma removal takes out several lipomas, soft, slow-growing lumps of fat under the skin, usually through small cuts under local anaesthesia as day care. Many can often be removed in one sitting, and selected ones can be reduced by liposuction through smaller openings. Each lump is sent to the laboratory to confirm it is benign.

Very minimal cut or small incision, closed with double-layered cosmetic sutures. A very thin, minimal scar is expected after surgery.
What is a lipoma?
A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) lump of fat cells enclosed in a thin capsule, usually just under the skin. It feels soft or rubbery, moves slightly when pressed and grows slowly, if at all. Lipomas are common and can appear anywhere, most often on the shoulders, back, arms, neck, chest and thighs.
Most people have one or two. Some develop many over the years; this can run in families. Rarely, multiple lipomas are part of a wider condition, which is why a pattern of many lumps is assessed carefully.
When should a lump be checked?
Every new lump should be checked once. See a doctor sooner if a lump:
- is larger than about 5 cm, or growing quickly;
- is hard, fixed or deep under the muscle;
- is painful, red or hot;
- has come back after previous removal.
These features do not mean cancer, but they can prompt an ultrasound or MRI scan before surgery.
Who may benefit from removal?
Lipomas do not have to be removed. People choose removal when a lipoma:
- is visible or affects appearance;
- presses on nerves, aches or catches on clothing;
- is growing or uncertain in nature;
- interferes with movement or exercise.
At consultation the doctor examines each lump, checks its depth, and decides whether a scan is needed. For many lipomas, removal in one sitting is planned, starting with the most troublesome.
What are the treatment options?
| Option | Suits | Points to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Observation | Small lipomas causing no problems | The lump stays and may grow slowly |
| Excision | Most lipomas | Complete removal with the capsule; a fine linear scar |
| Liposuction | Selected soft lipomas, or many lipomas in one area | Smaller openings; higher chance of leftover tissue and return |
| Liposuction with excision | Large lipomas | Smaller cut than excision alone |
The fat-removal technique is the same as in liposuction surgery. A lump in the armpit is assessed slightly differently; see armpit lipoma removal. Skin cysts can look similar; see sebaceous cyst removal.
How is lipoma removal performed?
- Marking: each lipoma is outlined, and the cut is planned along natural skin lines.
- Anaesthesia: local anaesthetic is injected around the lump.
- Removal: through a small cut, the lipoma is freed from the surrounding tissue and removed whole with its capsule. Liposuction may be used for selected lumps.
- Closure: deep stitches close the space, and fine stitches or glue close the skin.
- Laboratory examination of the removed tissue.
How should you prepare, and what should you ask?
- Tell the doctor about blood thinners and supplements that increase bleeding.
- Mention any family history of lipomas.
- Wear loose clothing that will not press on the dressings.
Questions to ask:
- Do any of my lumps need a scan first?
- How many can be removed in one sitting?
- Will you use excision or liposuction, and why?
- How long will the scars be?
What is recovery like?
| Time | What to expect for most patients |
|---|---|
| Days 1-3 | Mild soreness and bruising; keep dressings dry; many return to desk work |
| Days 7-14 | Stitches removed if not dissolvable |
| Weeks 2-4 | Return to exercise; avoid strain on back and shoulder wounds |
| Months 3-12 | Scars fade and soften |
What are the risks?
- Bruising or haematoma, and seroma (fluid in the space left by the lump).
- Infection, uncommon.
- Scarring, sometimes wide on the back and shoulders.
- Recurrence or leftover tissue, more likely after liposuction.
- Numbness near the scar, usually temporary.
- Nerve injury, rare, mainly with deep lipomas.
Contact the doctor for increasing swelling, redness, pus or fever.
What results can you expect?
Most people have a smooth contour and a fine scar once healing is complete. The laboratory report usually confirms a benign lipoma. If you tend to form lipomas, new ones may appear later and can be removed when needed.
What happens if a lipoma is left untreated?
Most lipomas are harmless to leave once a doctor has checked them. They grow slowly, if at all, and they do not go away on their own. The drawbacks of waiting are practical. A larger lipoma needs a longer cut to remove, and one near a nerve or joint may start to ache or catch with movement.
In people who form many lipomas, new lumps tend to keep appearing over the years. A common approach is to remove the lumps that cause trouble and keep an eye on the rest.
Non-surgical care means watching. Photograph or measure the lumps every few months, and see a doctor sooner if one grows quickly, becomes hard or painful, or feels deeper than the others. Creams, tablets and injections have not been shown to reliably remove lipomas.
Common myths about lipomas
- “Having many lipomas means cancer is spreading.” Multiple lipomas are usually benign and often run in families, though rare associated conditions are checked for.
- “Lipomas come from eating too much ghee or oily food.” The cause is not fully understood, genes play a part, and lipomas also appear in slim people.
- “A lipoma must come out before it turns into cancer.” Ordinary lipomas are not thought to become cancerous; removal is for symptoms, appearance or an uncertain diagnosis.
- “Herbal pastes or tablets can dissolve lipomas.” None has been shown to remove them; excision or, in selected cases, liposuction is needed.
What affects the cost of lipoma removal in Pune?
- Number, size and depth of lipomas.
- Technique: excision, liposuction or both.
- Anaesthesia: local or general.
- Scans before surgery and the laboratory examination after.
Questions about multiple lipoma surgery
Can a lipoma come back after removal?
A lipoma removed completely with its capsule rarely returns in the same place. Recurrence is more likely after liposuction, which can leave fragments behind. People who tend to form lipomas may develop new ones elsewhere.
Is lipoma removal painful?
Local anaesthetic numbs the area, so you feel the injection but not the removal. Mild soreness for a few days afterwards is usually managed with simple painkillers.
Do lipomas turn into cancer?
Ordinary lipomas are benign and are not thought to turn into cancer. A rare fatty cancer called liposarcoma can look similar, which is why a lump that is large, deep, hard, fast-growing or painful should be checked, sometimes with a scan.
Can lipomas be treated without surgery?
Small lipomas that cause no problems can simply be watched. Injections and creams are not reliable ways to remove them. Removal is by excision or, in selected cases, liposuction.
Why do I have many lipomas?
Some people develop several lipomas over time, and in some families they are inherited, a condition called familial multiple lipomatosis. Rarely, multiple lipomas are part of another condition, which a doctor will consider. Read more in our guide to multiple lipomas.
Will there be a scar?
Yes, a fine line, usually shorter than the lipoma because the lump can be squeezed out through a smaller cut. Liposuction leaves only small openings.
Is lipoma removal covered by insurance?
It depends on your policy. Removal for a painful or growing lump, or one that needs a diagnosis, is more likely to be covered than removal for appearance alone. Check with your insurer.
