Earlobe Repair in Pune: Fixing Torn, Split and Stretched Ear Lobes
Earlobe repair is a short procedure under local anaesthesia that closes a torn, split or stretched ear lobe. The damaged edges are trimmed and stitched in layers, often with a small zig-zag or flap to prevent a notch at the lower edge. Normal activities resume the same day, and the ear can usually be re-pierced once healed.

What each video covers

Very minimal cut or small incision, closed with double-layered cosmetic sutures. A very thin, minimal scar is expected after surgery.
What is a torn or stretched earlobe?
The ear lobe is a soft fold of skin and fat with no cartilage. Over time, the weight of earrings, a sudden pull, or deliberate stretching can damage it:
- Elongated hole: the piercing has stretched into a slit, but the lower edge is intact.
- Partial split: the hole has torn part of the way through.
- Complete split: the lobe is divided into two tails.
- Stretched (gauged) lobe: a large round hole from plugs or tunnels.
- Keloid: a raised scar after piercing, treated as part of keloid treatment.
Heavy earrings worn for long periods, particularly at weddings and festivals, are a common cause.
Who may benefit, and how is it assessed?
Most people with a torn, split or stretched lobe are suitable, provided there is no active infection. The doctor examines each ear, measures the defect, checks the thickness of the lobe and asks whether you want to wear earrings again. Any history of keloids changes the plan.
What are the repair options?
| Option | Suits | Points to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Straight-line repair | Elongated holes and simple splits | Can leave a small notch at the lower edge as the scar contracts |
| Repair with a small zig-zag (Z-plasty) or flap | Complete splits | Reduces notching; slightly more complex |
| Repair keeping part of the hole | Partial splits, in selected cases | Earrings can be worn sooner, but the evidence is limited |
| Flap reconstruction | Large stretched or gauged lobes | More tissue rearrangement |
| Re-piercing after healing | Anyone wanting earrings | Placed through healthy tissue beside the scar |
Small studies suggest that adding a flap to a simple closure reduces lengthening and notching of the repaired lobe. The repair uses the same fine-stitch principles as facial cosmetic stitches.
How is earlobe repair performed?
- Anaesthesia: local anaesthetic is injected into the lobe.
- Freshening the edges: the skin lining the tear or hole is trimmed so that the edges can heal together.
- Shaping: a small zig-zag or flap is designed at the lower edge if needed.
- Closure: fine stitches on the front, back and lower edge.
- Dressing: a light dressing or ointment is applied.
How should you prepare, and what should you ask?
- Remove all earrings before the appointment.
- Tell the doctor if you have had keloids or poor healing before.
- Plan any important event at least a few weeks after the repair.
Questions to ask:
- Which technique will you use, and will there be a notch?
- When can I re-pierce, and where will the new hole be?
- What weight of earrings is safe afterwards?
What is recovery like?
| Time | What to expect for most patients |
|---|---|
| Same day | Mild soreness; normal activities resume |
| Days 1-7 | Keep the ear clean; apply ointment as advised; avoid pulling clothes over the ear |
| Days 7-10 | Stitches removed |
| Weeks 6-12 | Repair softens; re-piercing can usually be planned |
What are the risks?
- Notch at the lower edge of the lobe as the scar contracts.
- Infection, uncommon.
- Keloid or thick scar, more likely in people prone to keloids.
- Asymmetry between the two ears.
- Re-tearing if heavy earrings are worn again through the repair.
Contact the doctor for spreading redness, swelling or discharge, or if a firm lump develops along the scar.
What results can you expect?
Most repaired lobes look natural once healed, with a fine scar that is difficult to see. Small studies report high satisfaction and low rates of re-splitting when earrings are worn sensibly afterwards.
Is treatment necessary, and what are the alternatives?
Repair is a choice, not a medical need. A torn or stretched lobe is not harmful, and waiting is safe. It will not close by itself, though. Once skin has grown over the edges of a split, they stay apart until they are trimmed and stitched. An elongated hole that keeps carrying heavy earrings tends to lengthen further and can go on to split completely.
If you are not ready for repair, you can:
- switch to light studs or clip-on earrings that do not hang from the damaged hole;
- use adhesive support patches behind the lobe for occasional heavy jewellery;
- avoid long, heavy earrings in a partly split lobe, so that the tear does not run through to the edge.
Repair is easier to plan before a wedding or festival season than in the weeks just before it.
Common myths about torn earlobes
- “A torn earlobe will join back if you stop wearing earrings.” Once the torn edges have healed over with skin, they cannot join without being trimmed and stitched.
- “After repair, the ear can never be pierced again.” Re-piercing is usually possible once healed, through healthy tissue beside the scar.
- “A repaired lobe is stronger, so heavy earrings are fine.” A repaired lobe can tear again, so lighter earrings or short periods of wear are advised.
- “Earlobe repair needs admission and general anaesthesia.” It is usually a short day-care procedure under local anaesthesia.
What affects the cost of earlobe repair in Pune?
- One or both ears.
- Type of damage: a simple split, a complete split or a large stretched hole.
- Keloid treatment, if needed.
- Re-piercing and follow-up visits.
Questions about ear lobe repair
When can I re-pierce after earlobe repair?
Usually once the repair has healed and softened, often after about six to twelve weeks. The new hole is placed through healthy tissue beside the scar rather than through it.
Is earlobe repair painful?
The local anaesthetic injection stings briefly, then the ear is numb. Soreness afterwards is mild and usually needs only simple painkillers.
Can a stretched earlobe from gauges be repaired?
Yes. Large stretched holes need more tissue rearrangement than a simple split, sometimes with small flaps, but most can be closed in one procedure.
Will the repaired earlobe tear again?
It can if heavy earrings are worn through it again. Choosing lighter earrings, using support patches or wearing heavy jewellery only for short periods lowers the risk.
Will there be a scar?
There will be a fine line where the split was. It is usually hard to notice once healed. People prone to keloids need extra care and follow-up.
What if I have a keloid on my earlobe?
Ear lobe keloids after piercing are removed and followed by injections or a pressure earring to reduce return. See keloid treatment.
