What Is Rhinoplasty Recovery Like, Week by Week?
By Dr. Sushrut Tated, plastic surgeon
Rhinoplasty recovery follows a typical pattern: a blocked nose and bruising around the eyes in the first days, splint removal after about a week, a return to desk work after seven to ten days, and most visible bruising gone by about two weeks. Swelling, especially at the tip, takes 6 to 12 months to settle fully. See rhinoplasty.

What does rhinoplasty recovery depend on?
Recovery is quicker after a small hump reduction through closed cuts, and slower after open surgery, bone work, septum straightening, grafts or revision surgery. Thick nasal skin swells more and for longer than thin skin. Your general health, smoking and how carefully you follow aftercare also matter.
Rhinoplasty recovery timeline
| Time | What you may feel and see | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Day of surgery | Blocked nose, mild bleeding, drowsiness | Rest with the head raised; cold compresses around the eyes |
| Days 1-3 | Peak swelling and bruising around the eyes; mouth breathing | Keep the head raised; avoid bending and straining; take medicines as prescribed |
| About day 7 | Splint and any internal splints removed | The nose looks swollen; this is expected |
| Week 2 | Most bruising fading | Many return to desk work and social activities |
| Weeks 3-6 | Swelling continues to reduce | Light exercise; protect the nose from knocks |
| Months 3-6 | Nose looks natural to others; tip still slightly swollen | Normal activities |
| 6-12 months | Final shape becomes clear | Review with your surgeon |
How do you manage swelling and a blocked nose?
- Sleep with your head raised on two or three pillows for the first week or two.
- Use cold compresses around the eyes, not on the nose, in the first 48 hours.
- Use saline sprays or rinses only as advised.
- Avoid hot showers, saunas and very spicy food in the first days, as they can increase swelling.
- Do not blow your nose for about two weeks.
What should you avoid during recovery?
- Knocks and pressure on the nose, including from glasses, for several weeks.
- Heavy lifting and straining, which can trigger bleeding.
- Smoking, which slows healing of the delicate tip skin.
- Swimming, until your surgeon agrees.
- Judging the result too early, while swelling distorts the shape.
When can you return to normal activities?
| Activity | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Desk work | About 7-10 days |
| Social events and photographs | Often after about 2 weeks |
| Light exercise | About 2-3 weeks |
| Glasses on the bridge | Often after several weeks, if bones were reshaped |
| Contact sports | About 6 weeks or more |
How does recovery differ by type of rhinoplasty?
- Closed rhinoplasty: often slightly less tip swelling, as the skin is not lifted.
- Open rhinoplasty: more tip swelling for longer, and a small columella scar that fades over months.
- Septorhinoplasty: more nasal blockage in the first week.
- Revision rhinoplasty: usually more swelling and a longer settling time, especially if ear or rib cartilage was used.

Myths about rhinoplasty recovery
- “The final nose is visible when the splint comes off.” Swelling hides the final shape for months.
- “Packing is always painful to remove.” Many rhinoplasties today use soft splints or no packing at all.
- “A tip that feels firm means something is wrong.” Firmness and numbness at the tip are common and usually settle.
- “Recovery is the same for everyone.” Thick skin, open surgery and revisions all take longer.
Warning signs after rhinoplasty
Contact your surgeon for bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure after 10 to 15 minutes, fever, increasing pain or swelling after the first few days, a foul smell, or clear watery fluid running from the nose. Seek emergency care for heavy bleeding or difficulty breathing. Our article on rhinoplasty risks explains complications in more detail.
Planning your recovery
Plan about a week to ten days off work, and avoid important events and photographs for at least two weeks. Have someone with you on the first night. If you are still deciding, read about rhinoplasty cost in Pune and the operation itself on the rhinoplasty page.
Frequently asked questions
When can I blow my nose after rhinoplasty?
Usually not for about two weeks. Gently clean the nostrils as advised and use saline sprays if recommended. Sneeze with your mouth open.
When can I wear glasses after rhinoplasty?
Avoid resting glasses on the bridge for several weeks if the bones were reshaped. Tape them to the forehead, use lightweight frames or switch to contact lenses, as advised.
When can I exercise after rhinoplasty?
Walking is encouraged from the first days. Light exercise usually restarts after two to three weeks, and contact sports or activities that risk a knock to the nose after about six weeks or longer.
Why does my nose look swollen months after surgery?
Swelling, especially at the tip and in thick skin, settles slowly over 6 to 12 months, and sometimes longer after open or revision surgery. The nose usually looks natural to others well before then.
Is it normal for my nose to feel numb?
Yes. The tip and sometimes the upper front teeth can feel numb for weeks to months, and feeling usually returns gradually.
When can I fly after rhinoplasty?
Many people can fly after about a week or two, once the splint is off and bleeding has settled. Ask your surgeon, especially for long flights.
