Will a Face Cut Leave a Scar, and How Can You Make It Less Visible?
By Dr. Sushrut Tated, plastic surgeon
Will a face cut leave a scar? Any cut through the full skin leaves some scar, but the face heals well, and careful early repair makes a big difference. Clean the wound, press to stop bleeding and get gaping cuts closed within hours. Fine stitches, early removal, silicone and sun protection keep the scar fine. See facial cosmetic stitches.

Dr. Sushrut explains facial cosmetic stitches
Why does the face heal differently?
The face has a very rich blood supply, so cuts there heal quickly and resist infection better than cuts on the legs or feet. But the face is also where scars are most noticed. Small mismatches matter: a lip border out of line by a millimetre, a notch in an eyelid or nostril edge, or stitch marks across a scar can all be seen at conversational distance. That is why the first repair is the most important chance to get a fine result.
What should you do straight after a face cut?
- Press firmly with a clean cloth for ten minutes to stop bleeding.
- Rinse gently with clean running water to remove dirt.
- Cover with a clean dressing.
- Do not apply turmeric, powders, toothpaste or home pastes, which tattoo dirt into the wound and hide its depth.
- Get it seen within a few hours if it is gaping, deep, jagged or over the lip, eyelid, nose or ear.
Call 108 or 112 for heavy bleeding that does not stop with pressure, a head injury with drowsiness or vomiting, or an eye injury.
Which face cuts need stitches?
| Cut | Usual care |
|---|---|
| Graze or very shallow cut | Clean, cover, keep moist; no stitches |
| Small straight cut, edges meet easily | Skin glue or adhesive strips may be enough |
| Gaping cut, or longer than about 1 cm | Stitches |
| Deep cut into fat or muscle | Layered stitches |
| Cut through the lip border, eyelid, nostril or ear | Precise repair, ideally by a plastic surgeon |
| Dog or animal bite | Thorough cleaning; closure decided by the doctor; rabies and tetanus advice |
What does a cosmetic repair involve?
A careful facial repair uses local anaesthesia (or sedation for a frightened child), thorough cleaning, removal of ragged or dirty edges, deep dissolving stitches to take the tension off the skin, and very fine stitches or glue at the surface. Key landmarks, such as the line of the lip or the eyebrow, are lined up first. The aim is a thin scar that lies in natural skin creases where possible.
How long does a face cut take to heal?
| Time | What to expect |
|---|---|
| First 48 hours | Keep dry and clean as advised; mild swelling |
| About 5 days | Face stitches usually removed |
| 2 to 6 weeks | Scar pink and may feel firm; start scar care once healed |
| 3 to 6 months | Redness fades gradually |
| 12 months or more | Scar reaches its final appearance |
Scar care that helps
- Silicone gel or sheets once the wound has fully closed, for several months.
- Sun protection every day for at least a year; sun darkens young scars, especially on brown skin.
- Gentle massage of the healed scar if advised.
- Avoid picking at scabs.
- Watch for thickening: a scar that becomes raised, itchy or spreads should be checked early; read keloid vs hypertrophic scar.
Myths about face cuts and scars
- “Stitches always leave marks.” Fine stitches removed early on the face rarely leave track marks.
- “Leave the wound open to air so it heals faster.” A clean, moist, covered wound usually heals better.
- “Children do not scar.” Children heal fast but can form thick scars.
- “Nothing can be done about an old scar.” Mature scars can often be improved.
When should you see a plastic surgeon?
For cuts through the lip border, eyelid, nose or ear, deep or jagged wounds, cuts with tissue missing, dog bites on the face, cuts in young children, and any scar that heals wide, raised or pulls on a feature. For scars already formed, read scar revision surgery or laser or see scar revision surgery.
What to ask
- Does this cut need stitches, glue or strips?
- Which stitches will be used, and when will they come out?
- When should I start silicone and sun protection?
- What can be done if the scar heals poorly?
For repair of fresh face cuts in children and adults, see facial cosmetic stitches.
Frequently asked questions
How soon should a face cut be stitched?
As soon as possible, ideally within a few hours. Clean facial wounds can often still be closed later because the face has a good blood supply, but earlier closure is easier and usually heals better.
When are face stitches removed?
Usually after about five days on the face, sooner than on other parts of the body, to avoid stitch marks. Your doctor will set the date.
Does a child's face cut need a plastic surgeon?
Small, clean cuts can be closed by any trained doctor. Cuts through the lip border, eyelid, nose or ear, deep or jagged cuts, and cuts in young children who need sedation benefit from a plastic surgeon's repair.
Are skin glue or strips as good as stitches?
For small, straight cuts under little tension, skin glue or adhesive strips can give similar results. Deeper, gaping or irregular cuts need stitches, sometimes in layers.
Can an old face scar be improved later?
Yes. Once a scar matures, usually after about a year, options such as scar revision surgery, laser or injections can make it less noticeable.
